What is e -Shram Card?
The Government of India started the e-Shram Yojana to provide social security to workers in unorganised sectors. The objective of the e-Shram card is to collect the database of unorganised workers to provide them with the benefits of various government schemes.
Any person working in an unorganised sector can apply for a an e-Shram card or Shramik card. In the Budget 2025, the grovernment announced that it issue identity cards and register gig and platform workers on the e-Shram portal, recognising their key role in energising the new-age services economy.
The labourers working in unorganised sectors can obtain various benefits through the e-Shram card, such as a pension amount after 60 years, death insurance, financial aid in case of incapacity, UAN number, etc.

What is Unorganised Sector?
The unorganised sector comprises establishments or units engaged in selling services, goods, or production and employs less than ten workers. These units are not covered under the ESIC and EPFO. Any worker working in the unorganised sector is considered an unorganised worker. A person who is not a member of ESIC or EPFO and is a home-based worker, self-employed worker or a worker in unorganised sector is called an unorganised worker.
e-Shram Card Benefits
The unorganised worker having an e-Shram card will get the following benefits:
- A pension of Rs.3,000 per month after attaining 60 years.
- Death insurance of Rs.2,00,000 and financial aid of Rs.1,00,000 in the case of partial handicap of a worker.
- If a beneficiary (worker in an unorganised sector with an e-Shram card) dies due to a mishap, the spouse will get all the benefits.
- Beneficiaries will receive a 12-digit UAN number valid throughout India.
Who is Eligible for e-Shram Card?
- Any unorganised worker or any person working in the unorganised sector.
- Workers should be aged between 16-59 years.
- Workers should have a valid mobile number linked with the Aadhaar card.
- Workers should not be income tax payers.
e-Shram Card Registration: How to Apply Online?
The application for the e-Shram card can be made through the CSC (Common Service Centre) or the e-Shram portal. The eligible persons can visit the nearest CSC centre and apply for the e-Shram card. They can locate the nearest CSC centre on the e-Shram Portal by entering the state and district for applying for the e-Shram card.
Here are the steps of e-Shram card registration:
Step 1: Visit the e-Shram portal.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Register on eShram’ option under the ‘One Stop Solution’ tab.

Step 3: Enter the Aadhaar-linked mobile number, captcha code, select if you are an active member of EPFO and ESCI and click on the ‘Send OTP’ button.

Step 4: An OTP will be sent to the mobile number. Enter the OTP, captcha code and click on the ‘Submit’ button.
Step 5: Complete the Aadhaar e-KYC form. Select Register using Aadhaar number, enter your Aadhaar number, select OTP, enter the captcha code, agree to the consent and click ‘Submit’.
Step 6: Enter the OTP, captcha code and click ‘Validate’.
Step 7: Confirm the personal details that appear on the screen and click ‘Continue to Enter Other Details’.
Step 8: Enter the personal information, address, educational qualification, occupation and skills and bank details.
The e-Shram card is for unorganised workers to access various government benefits and services. Unorganised workers with e-Shram cards will receive pension benefits and medical insurance for emergencies. This provides social security and welfare benefits to unorganised sector workers.
